Uncover the truth about your data

data manipulation:
the basics
-
Data manipulation is the easiest way to feed people misinformation. Basically, it is when people take bits of true data but make the differences more dramatic to influence people. For example, they might be trying to sell something or convince people to believe in a certain idea.
-
Data manipulation can be seen in a variety of places, such as the news, journal articles, and in a lot of scientific charts. Consumers need to be careful because manipulated graphs can appear in something as innocent as a wild bird magazine.
-
Even though this seems pretty bad, there are some ways to keep from getting manipulated. One way is to always double check sources, and if an article or webpage does not cite their sources, then second guess the information. Always pay close attention to the x and y axis on the graphs.
-
Remember to always check the x and y axis for ones that do not start at zero. Secondly always make sure the full story is being told, and that the graphs match the information needed. Finally, look for forced perspective. This is when the maker of the pie chart (usually) tilts it to make the slices in the front look like they are bigger than they are. When in doubt, look for the original source of the data.
this is what a good non manipulated graph should look like

Now use the newly gained knowledge to see the flaw in this graph to the side or below.
could you find it?
There are several things wrong with this graph. First, the number line was made so it was hard to see. Also, could you tell that the line did not start at zero? This makes it so a small gap looks like a very big gap. This is how data can be manipulated to make it look like grades are going down by a lot.
